Belgian developer Larian Studios, led by Swen Vincke, has reportedly declined to develop Baldur’s Gate 4 or further downloadable expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3 in order to pursue new projects. Despite that decision, the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be continued — not as a game sequel, but as a television series.
According to reporting from Deadline, HBO is producing a series that will pick up the narrative thread of Baldur’s Gate 3. The show will deal with the fallout from the events of the game, bringing together both returning and new characters as they contend with the consequences left in the game’s wake.
The series is expected to center on lower-level adventurers who gradually grow in power over the course of the story. Producers have said they intend, when feasible, to involve the game's original voice actors to reprise their roles for the screen.
Craig Mazin, best known as a co-creator of 'Chernobyl' and a writer on 'The Last of Us', will be the creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer on the HBO adaptation. Mazin has played Baldur’s Gate 3 extensively — he has described spending 'almost 1000 hours' in the game — and called the opportunity to continue the tale created by Larian and Wizards of the Coast a dream come true.
Reports also note that Mazin completed the game on its hardcore difficulty setting, underscoring his familiarity with the RPG’s systems and story. That deep engagement with the source material is being highlighted as a major asset for the adaptation.
No release date or production timetable for the HBO series has been announced yet, and further casting and crew details remain under wraps. Game industry presenter Geoff Keighley has reported that Larian Studios is not directly participating in the show’s production.
Baldur’s Gate 3 originally launched in August 2023 on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Since release the role‑playing game has received widespread acclaim: it has accumulated more than 280 'Game of the Year' awards, including several prominent prizes, and has sold over 20 million copies.
Larian Studios developed the game in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast. Although the studio has chosen not to pursue a numbered follow-up, the universe and characters of Baldur’s Gate 3 will continue to be explored through the upcoming HBO television adaptation.
